A SPOONFUL OF WILLIE DIXON

“This album is a true example of how Emma has developed as an artist and her passion for the Blues. Recorded in January 2025 live in Sheffield, England in one room in one day”
British Rhythm & Blues Singer Emma Wilson releases her 3rd Album, 'A Spoonful of Willie Dixon', recorded live in the studio, through Memphis based distribution giants “Select-O-Hits” following the success of her excellent 2022 all original Americana-influenced debut 'Wish Her Well' and the exquisite and highly acclaimed STAX-esque 2023 release 'Memphis Calling' an album she recorded at ‘Sam Phillips Recording Studios’ Memphis with 'The Hi Rhythm Section' giving her the international hit 'What Kind of Love' featuring Don Bryant.
Returning to her beloved Memphis in May 2024, Emma performed at the inaugural 'RiverBeat' festival with 'The Bo-Keys' (who’s bandleader Scott Bomar produced 'Memphis Calling') she then drove down the Blues Highway to Clarksdale to sing at the legendary 'Ground Zero Club' at the invitation of the 'Pinetop Perkins Foundation'.
Visiting Clarksdale created the spark for Emma’s new album 'A Spoonful of Willie Dixon'. Having recorded Willies’ 'Hoochie Coochie Ma(ma)' on 'Memphis Calling', prompting pianist Archie ‘Hubbie’ Turner to exclaim "She’s not from Middlesbrough, she’s from Mississippi!”, Emma was inspired to sing more of Dixon’s songs and record them with her wonderful British band. The deep respect that Emma and the band have for the legendary Willie Dixon is evident in their interpretation of his songs. Emma also showcases her extraordinarily versatile blues voice through his brilliant compositions.

Emma says : “LoveHeart” was made when I was able to go into the studio for a few short hours to record my vocals between Lockdown 1 & 2. Dean Stockdale recorded his beautiful piano parts from his home. I called the EP LoveHeart because that's what it is ..like a loveheart to everyone listening... The vocal takes are all one take, no edits, no reverb or effects, no cuts – like they would be performed live. It was essential to me that this album is very real, the global pandemic has higlighted our need to be more human. I can hear changes in my voice, emotion and feeling, they are all part of the story, part of the blues. The four songs I sing are all covers and have a theme in my heart. We are all so separated at the moment, the idea of meeting a lover from a train, calling your mother, needing love so bad & being misplaced are all themes running through these songs.

The story of Memphis Calling
In January 2023 Emma travelled to Memphis to visit her Distribution Company 'Select-O-Hits' and meet with company owner Johnny Phillips who was excited to share that the 'Sam Phillips Recording Studios' owned by Sam’s son Jerry Phillips, had recently acquired the original STAX recording console and she should go there and record a new album!
Emma Wilson - "This was an opportunity I couldn’t miss, so in June ’23 I returned to Memphis. I was incredibly blessed to have Emmy Award winning producer Scott Bomar agree to make the record with me and he brought in legendary Memphian musicians."
The album was produced by EMMY award winning and Grammy nominated producer Scott Bomar.
"The recording session was so soulful – drenched in rhythm & blues. Singing with the incredible band... in Sam Phillips Studio! It was a magical experience…”
“I want to represent a modern English woman, deeply influenced by the music of Memphis, bringing her own Britishness, making an album with a unique contemporary sound and I believe with "Memphis Calling" we have achieved this.”
As well as iconic Memphis studio musicians, the album has a guest vocalist in the form of Don Bryant, who co-wrote ‘I Can’t Stand the Rain' with one of Emma's favourite soul singers, Ann Peebles.
